Cigarette Butts in Park

Are there any maintenance issues at the park that requires the attention of the Richmond Hill K9 Klub or the Town of Richmond Hill's attention?

Cigarette Butts in Park

Postby DavidW » Wed Mar 03, 2010 7:31 pm

I received an email today posing this question:

Hi David. I was wondering if there is anything that we can do to stop the cigarette butts from being thrown around the park. It sure looks bad but even worse, dogs may start eating them. Would like to hear your thoughts.

My reply:

It’s a great question and nobody has come up with a reasonable solution yet. The Klub had the discussion with the Parks department when the rules were drafted prior to construction. Nobody could solve the problem then. First of all, there is no by-law that disallows smoking outside on public property like parks. I suppose dropped butts falls under littering, but there is no reasonable way to enforce it. We can’t even get everyone to pick up poop and other garbage!

I’d like to see if we can spark some ideas in the forum area of our website. We’ll see, it’s still new and it takes a while for people to start posting regularly.

So, for now, as with poop, the park volunteers have to pickup and educate park users the best we can.

What are your thoughts in this area? I am going to create a topic in the forum area now.

Now I'd love to hear if anyone out there has any ideas?

Cigarettes in the park. Here are a few suggestions. Get one of those cigarette disposal stands or put up a no smoking sign. Also there needs to be a garbage can at the start of the path leading to the roadway.
