Tower Hill Park
Richmond Hill’s first leash-free dog park is located at Yonge and Tower Hill Road and officially opened on October 25th, 2009.
The dog park is approximately 1.8 acres, completely fenced in with small dog area (intended for dogs under 12lbs.) and the larger main area. The entrance is double gated for safety.
Parking is across the street in the plaza. Please do not park on the road.
Being the first of its kind in Richmond Hill, the park is attracting a number dogs and their owners new to the off leash park experience. The OSPCA has published a ‘Beginners Guide to Dog Park Etiquette’ which we would encourage all park goers to read.
Our role
The Richmond Hill K9 Klub shares responsibility for the ongoing operations of the park with the Town of Richmond Hill including:
- Ensuring that the facility is kept free of dog waste
- Routine inspection and temporary fence repairs
- Repair of holes and/or turf damage
- Fostering awareness around the rules applicable to the off leash area and the consequences for breaking the applicable rules amongst users of the area
- Facilitating communication and cooperation amongst dog owners, between dog owners and other park users, and between the group itself and Town staff
It is not intended that volunteers be responsible for enforcement of off leash dog area rules.
Future plans for the park
This park was opened as a year long Pilot Project. The park is hugely popular making the project a success and proving the need for a dog park in the Town of Richmond Hill. Due to neaby resident complaints, however, this location will close once a new location has been found and opened. Thanks to overwhelming support from park users, Tower Hill will remain open for the foreseeable future! Town of Richmond Hill staff are to review park status once again 12 months after the new Phyllis Rawlinson’s Park opens in 2012. Plans are underway to immediately address neigbourhood concerns with noise etc.
Park upgrades are part of the Klub’s responsibility. Extra amenities can be added during and after the building of the new park. We have plans to add the following to our new location:
- Agility equipment
- Sun Shelters
- Portable wading pools
Of course, no upgrades are free. Fundraising is on the agenda, but if you’d like to help out immediately, please use the button provided below to donate.
