Today we had the opportunity to listen in on Town Council’s deliberations in deciding whether to keep the status quo with respect to Animal Services or work on a “Made in Richmond Hill” approach to this important community need.
Although the final decision on how the Town will move forward on this issue has been moved [...]

Day two at the Carnival was so much fun! We had a ton of happy customers and, by the end of the day, some very dirty ones! Unfortunately, with the slightly warmer weather on Sunday, the ground became a mucky mess, but the dogs still had a blast running (and rolling) around. I’m sure there [...]
The temporary dog park at the Winter Carnival is a big hit with some very happy pooches! A few pictures for day one can be found in our album. We’re doing the same thing all over again tomorrow – come on by for some fun!

Stumbled across this article and thought it to be a good reality check! Some of us have dogs with “issues” and wish that our dog could just be “normal”… Do we REALLY want a “normal” dog? I don’t think so!

Members of the K9 Klub board met with the park planners last week to take a look at the draft plans for park layout. It’s looking great but we offered up some modifications and made suggestions. We look forward to receiving and posting some plans and mock-up drawings when they have been finalized next year! [...]
A bit of a soggy day for a parade, but we still had fun! Thank you to the great bunch of folks and dogs that braved the wet weather this year! No matter the weather, the kids are out for the parade and the dogs are always a hit. If you didn’t make it out [...]

Saw this article in Dogs in Canada and immediately thought I should post a link. It doesn’t take the place of taking an Emergency First Aid Course, but knowing the basics might just help out one day!

Although it seems this rain may never end, it has cleared long enough on a couple of occasions to give us a small taste of the hot weather soon to come. Over the winter we have fallen out of the habit of packing water with us on our trips to the park and on walks [...]

What wonderful and amazing companions our canines are. It is awe inspiring what measures they will take and what they will endure to protect their humans.
With our recent cold temperatures and windchills, we thought it a good idea to remind everyone of the symptoms of frostbite and how to recognize and treat them.
It’s easy to stay a bit longer at the park than we should in the winter when we humans are warm in our multiple layers of winter [...]
They say a dog is man’s best friend, but it turns out the sentiment is mutual. Watch the joy overflow from this happy pup upon seeing her owner return from Afghanistan … and then go and give your own furry family members a hug!
You know what they say; the show must go on and that counts for Parades too! There was some light rain as the parade was staging and most of us were pretty damp by the time we got under way, but spirits were high during this much anticipated yearly event. After all, Santa was on [...]
We have recently been made aware of a few cases of mild Kennel Cough in dogs that frequent the dog park. While Kennel Cough is not usually a life threatening condition, it is uncomfortable for your canine and, if not looked after, can lead to more serious illnesses. It is also highly contagious.
Please familiarize [...]

This article arrived in my mailbox this morning from Modern Dog Magazine and I thought contained some valuable hints to keep our pooches safe on Halloween: The spookiest night of the year is almost upon us. For kids and many adults, it’s a howling good time, but for many dogs… not so much. Superstar behaviourist and [...]

A reminder if you border a greenspace in Town to be vigilant when letting your pets out in your backyard or when out walking in the early morning or evening. Just last night a dog lost her life within safety of her own dog run.
There have also been coyote sightings around the dog park; please very careful when visiting early [...]
Just a reminder to all that effective Saturday, October 16th the off leash area operating hours are reduced to 7am-7pm for the winter months.

It was another hot one for the clean up! A big thank you to Laurie & Daniel who dropped by to help out with the litter around the park. Fantastic job
Thanks also go to Spike’s dad who helped out with the line trimming in the park today – the help was very much appreciated!
Work on the long anticipated crosswalk across Tower Hill Road has begun. It will certainly be a relief to park users and residents to have a marked crossing to use as this road is a bit of a raceway!
The Town has been flooded with letters of support; some have been shared with the K9 Klub and some have not, but ALL are appreciated. Of course we still have a couple of months until the Parks report will be presented to Council and there is no such thing as too many letters, so keep [...]
Now more than ever we need individuals willing to help out with monitoring the status of the park for safety & maintenance along with filing brief reports as to number of users, noise levels, etc. This can be done while you are at the park with your dog and does not require a schedule. The [...]
We have received many requests for details of the petition filed to close the park.
You can read the cover letter for yourself here: Close Off Leash Park – July 11 2010 Petition Letter
Let us know what you think!
Last week the Klub had been made aware that local residents may be filing a petition to close the park. Last night’s Town Council meeting was the last before the summer break and we felt it was important to update council on the park successes so the Klub co-chair, David Walker, presented a 5 minute [...]
We had a lot of people drop by our booth at the events we attended over the last month; it was wonderful to meet so many people from the community! Many filled out a ballot for our free raffle which was drawn at the end of the day July 1.

We have another new addition to the park; a new tree in the small dog area!
Special thanks to Ramsey’s dad for transplanting a beautiful but unwanted tree from his clients property to its new home in our park. Hopefully the tree will quickly adapt to its new surroundings and provide some much needed shade for many [...]
While some of the Klub was manning the booth at the Oak Ridges Fair (thank you volunteers!), there were some guys at the park taking care of the installation of our long awaited bulletin board. They braved the threat of thunderstorms, heat, curious dogs and apparently underground boulders to do so, but it was worth [...]
So Heritage Festival was a very wet day – a big thank you to the volunteers that braved the (at times) torrential rain to help out at our booth!
Hopefully the weather will be much better for the Oak Ridges Fair this weekend! This fair is jam packed with events all weekend – [...]

There was much discussion about this and there were pros and cons to water being available at the park.
The pros are obvious – dogs get thirsty and having water ready and waiting would be awesome. Owners also wouldn’t have to lug water, bowl, etc. every time they came to the park.
There were a few [...]
• Dogs that enjoy rough and tumble play may growl and snap as part of that play. Dogs may also snarl and/or snap to “set their limits” with other dogs for example, to let the other dog know they are being too rough or too pushy.
• Dogs have various ways by which they communicate their dominance [...]
Yes, believe or not this is the most asked question for the week the park has been open. Well folks, here is your answer: ALL waste – garbage, recycle and yes, poop bags – should be tossed into the big bin at the bottom of the entrance stairs (pictured below).
I know that separating our [...]

Yes, it’s going to be a party beginning with a leash cutting ceremony! The Lions Club is going to be on site doing their thing with the BBQ and we’ll have some doggy games and contest going on as well. Make sure pooch is in costume because there are prizes on the line!
Don’t forget [...]
The park is really taking shape! The entrance stairs are going in and look terrific! Fence posts are in and some of the chain link has been installed. The recent rain has made a bit of a mess but it IS a construction zone!
Drove by this morning and there was lots of activity – surveyors, trucks etc – nice to see!
I think we are all beginning to wonder if they would EVER start on the park, but the heavy equipment moved in yesterday and work has begun!
Everyone keep their fingers crossed for good weather
