By Friday we can all use a laugh… this little pooch’s persistence provides just that!

Good Evening,
I would request your assitance in locating my lost Dog. She is a black and white springer spaniel. She recently had surgery is wearing a cone around her neck and is in need of medical attention. She was last seen [...]
I was inspired after an article about the dog parks was posted by Richmond Hill Liberal reporter, Adam McLean at 12:00am, January 1, 2012! It would appear that we were the first news item of the New Year! Happy New Year everyone!
So, I decided to spend a few hours this New Years Day, creating a [...]
Just a quick note to let everyone know we’ve moved the newsletter archive under the social menu above and added short content abstracts.

Don’t forget to leave milk & cookies out for Santa!
Well, just for a weekend anyhow! The Richmond Hill K9 Klub is bringing a new attraction to the Richmond Hill Winter Carnival 2012… a temporary off-leash area for two days during the carnival festivities. It will be located at the north end of the pond near the area where the dog show is held each [...]
Members of the K9 Klub board met with the park planners last week to take a look at the draft plans for park layout. It’s looking great but we offered up some modifications and made suggestions. We look forward to receiving and posting some plans and mock-up drawings when they have been finalized next year! [...]
A bit of a soggy day for a parade, but we still had fun! Thank you to the great bunch of folks and dogs that braved the wet weather this year! No matter the weather, the kids are out for the parade and the dogs are always a hit. If you didn’t make it out [...]
For some reason, the minutes have disappeared on the Town’s website. Perhaps it’s being edited…
We have a copy and have uploaded it to our server for your viewing pleasure. (Summaries of the speakers are within these full minutes - starts at bottom of page 10): Council Meeting Minutes PDF

“We find the greatest joy, not in getting, but in expressing what we are… Men do not really live for honors or for pay; their gladness is not the taking and holding, but in the doing, the striving, the building, the living. It is a higher joy to teach than to be taught. It is [...]
To everyone who made the effort to write an email, sign a petition, speak to council or just say a prayer…this is the tribute of gratitude to all of you. Without our community, we could not have given so much back to our Town and without our Town, we would have no community. Enjoy the [...]
This is it. Our last chance to save Tower Hill Park.
At the November 7, 2011 Richmond Hill Town Council’s Committee of the Whole Meeting, with thanks to Council, park supporters, members of the K9 Klub and THOR (Tower Hill Off Leash Rally), the decision to close the Tower Hill site when the new location [...]
Saw this article in Dogs in Canada and immediately thought I should post a link. It doesn’t take the place of taking an Emergency First Aid Course, but knowing the basics might just help out one day!

What a wonderful fall day we had on Sunday for our Howl-O-Ween! It was cool, but the sun was shining and the winds were calm. A good day to appreciate the stunning fall colours and, of course, our pooches in costume! A huge thank you to Rick from Global Pet Foods for the goody bags [...]
We had a marvelous day for our walk and truly enjoyed the fall colours and, of course the company! We’ll be arranging more of these walks soon…stay tuned!
Once again, it’s time for all you ghosts and goblins to join us for a fun-filled day including a costume contest, pet photos and special treats.
The date has been set as Sunday October 23 from 11:00am – 2:00pm and will be held in the Tower Hill Plaza in front of Global Pet Foods. Global, who will [...]

Hard to believe Thanksgiving is already here! I’m sure we’re all looking forward to spending time with family and the wonderful meal that is part of the holiday, but while the cooler weather is giving our four legged friends more pep in their step, the rest of us will be [...]

Surf Dog Ricochet recently ran a “dirty dog” photo contest and, although there were many photos entered of many very happy and very dirty dogs, Bailey Ann, a black lab, won paws down! Look at that doggy bliss!

The sign says that dogs must be on a leash. Says nothing about a human being on the other end! :)
One of my favorite sites, and usually the source of the pictures in our monthly newsletter, recently posted some great pictures of pooches keeping cool and I thought I’d share below.
How is your dog beating the heat this summer? Send us your stories or pictures! info@rhk9klub.ca
I count on Oscar and Zen to provide me with up to date material for my column. This past month has been slow to say the least. Oscar and Zen weren’t being as quirky or mischievous as they usually are and now I know why. They had been silently planning all month for their big escape, their boys [...]
This pooch is insistent that the ‘stranger’ on the park bench should throw a stick for him… very funny!
If you found yourself at Richmond Green this past Sunday, you were likely inundated with hundreds of happy residents with mutts in tow… an obvious sign that Richmond Hill K9 Klub’s Pooch Party sponsored by PetValu Richmond Hill North was the place to be June 26th. Enthusiastic dog-lovers (with and without their furry [...]

Staff of the Arnold Crescent Animal Hospital came in on the holiday Monday to plant flowers and were dismayed to find “Arnold”, their long time mascot, missing from his spot in the front garden.
Arnold has watched over the clinic for 20 years and has become a landmark. Made of solid concrete, the black statue of [...]
Although it seems this rain may never end, it has cleared long enough on a couple of occasions to give us a small taste of the hot weather soon to come. Over the winter we have fallen out of the habit of packing water with us on our trips to the park and on walks [...]
Like my kids, I consider my dogs to be an extension of myself. I know I shouldn’t, and that both my kids and my dogs have minds of their own, but I just can’t help it. So, when my dogs Oscar and Zen’s questionable behaviours arise at the off leash dog park, I find [...]
If you can start the day without caffeine,
If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,
If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,
If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any [...]

We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors. We borrow it from our Children.

This year, Earth Day at the dog park was another huge success for the Richmond Hill K9 Klub and all park-users. Not to mention the fact that our local event helped the [...]
Friday April 22 is Earth Day – Help us Celebrate it !!
Once again, it’s time to help out our community and our environment by ‘Pitching In” for the Town’s Operation Clean Sweep. The K9 Klub, with the help of volunteers and members has been instrumental in cleaning up the valleylands around our off-leash area [...]
“This too shall pass,” I telepathically transmitted the ancient proverb to Oscar; he nodded in agreement. The temporality of all material conditions, positive or negative, had become all too apparent. As I unlatched the pearly gate, and entered the heavenly Zen garden, I knew this paradise couldn’t last forever. Although I don’t consider [...]
Bounding through the gates
running down the hills we go,
greeted by our friends each time
in the rain, sun, or snow.
It is our favourite time of day
a place where we are free,
amongst our friends we run and play,
and rest under a tree.
Although we go for walks on a leash
nothing [...]

I am consistently amazed at the resilience and ability of dogs to forgive and trust in the face of such abuse. Companion animals play such an important role in our lives and become as much a part of some of our families as our children. Our lives are improved by having them and we are [...]
We came across a terrific article on this topic and with permission of the author (Caryn Charlie Liles Whatta Pup!) and we have posted it as a permanent page in the dog park area. Please take a moment to check it out under the “Dog Parks” tab above “In case of dog bite…”
Since the purpose of this blog is that of providing information to help people and their pets achieve and sustain wellness, it is critical that we discuss a health risk that is of particular concern at this time of year, especially if you frequent off-leash areas or ravines with water sources. Giardia are parasitic protozoans [...]
A heartfelt thank you all of our members and supporters that took time from their busy schedules to attend Richmond Hill’s Committee of the Whole meeting last night. The meeting proved to be very passionate and enlightening as anticipated.

Coming Very Soon…
Our new blog will be filled with important information about health and wellness for you and your dog. How can we can share a balanced life filled with good fun, good food and good health with our four-legged friends? Our canine companions, through becoming integrated into our family lives can also affect [...]
We are all responsible.
You might be asking why I would ever begin an article with such an openly contentious sentiment, but there it is. The recent period of more temperate climate has foreshadowed the horrible job that lies ahead for our small but generous army of volunteers this spring. As the snow melts away, [...]
At the Committee of the Whole meeting on April 4, 2011 @ 4:30 pm, the long-awaited staff report will be presented to Town Council.
The small group of local residents that want the park on Tower Hill Road closed (or relocated as they put it), are rallying friends, family and other people, [...]
The tree decorating season may have come to an end, but it’s still a custom that is very much practiced at the Off Leash Dog Park. On most occasions when Oscar, Zen and I visit the OLDP, “poop bags” can be seen hanging from the branches of the trees.
For those of you, who haven’t [...]
What wonderful and amazing companions our canines are. It is awe inspiring what measures they will take and what they will endure to protect their humans.
Subaru in the States has been running a series of commercials featuring Zelda, a Golden Retriever mix, and Olive, a Shar Pei mix. Below are a couple of the most recent, but there are another half dozen or so available on YouTube.
To back up their “Dog tested. Dog approved.” claim, Subaru is also running [...]
About twice a year, I am fortunate enough to get to go to my all time favourite restaurant, an upscale oyster bar located in downtown Toronto. The anticipation that I feel before I get in the car, as I am driving down the D.V.P. practically drooling, and then finally enjoying an assortment of decadent [...]
Oscar and I have been together now for just over 4 years, and until recently I would have said with conviction that I know everything there is to know about him. I know his favourite toy (Kong), treat (cranberry biscuits by Wags and Woofs), food (cheese), person (me) and place (the off [...]
” He looks love at me, deep as word e’er spake;
And from me never crumb or sup will take
But he wags thanks with his most vocal tail;
And when some crashing noise wakes all his fear
He is content and quiet if I’m near,

With our recent cold temperatures and windchills, we thought it a good idea to remind everyone of the symptoms of frostbite and how to recognize and treat them.
It’s easy to stay a bit longer at the park than we should in the winter when we humans are warm in our multiple layers of winter [...]
Probably the best commercial for dog treats ever! I could SO see mine doing this… lol
Who hasn’t seen this face in their dog at some point, particularly during the holidays!
They say a dog is man’s best friend, but it turns out the sentiment is mutual. Watch the joy overflow from this happy pup upon seeing her owner return from Afghanistan … and then go and give your own furry family members a hug!
Earlier this year, I took my 4 year old Husky, Oscar ,to the off leash dog park for the very first time. It was a sweltering day (as many July days were this past summer). Being the ever so responsible dog owner, I was well prepared with a plastic bag, 12oz water bottle and a [...]
You know what they say; the show must go on and that counts for Parades too! There was some light rain as the parade was staging and most of us were pretty damp by the time we got under way, but spirits were high during this much anticipated yearly event. After all, Santa was on [...]
We have recently been made aware of a few cases of mild Kennel Cough in dogs that frequent the dog park. While Kennel Cough is not usually a life threatening condition, it is uncomfortable for your canine and, if not looked after, can lead to more serious illnesses. It is also highly contagious.
Please familiarize [...]
In less than an hour all 6 trees donated by Tree Valley Garden Center were planted and staked! A huge thank you to everyone who came out to volunteer their time and muscle!

This article arrived in my mailbox this morning from Modern Dog Magazine and I thought contained some valuable hints to keep our pooches safe on Halloween: The spookiest night of the year is almost upon us. For kids and many adults, it’s a howling good time, but for many dogs… not so much. Superstar behaviourist and [...]

Want to take a guess at who was busted?
A reminder to all that the staff report on the dog park pilot project will be presented to Council shortly. Want to know how you can help? We’ll let you know [...]
Our Howl-o-ween celebration is on whether it’s raining or not. Hopefully not! We might setup just a little later and stay a little longer.
We look forward to seeing everyone!

A reminder if you border a greenspace in Town to be vigilant when letting your pets out in your backyard or when out walking in the early morning or evening. Just last night a dog lost her life within safety of her own dog run.
There have also been coyote sightings around the dog park; please very careful when visiting early [...]
Just a reminder to all that effective Saturday, October 16th the off leash area operating hours are reduced to 7am-7pm for the winter months.
Please respect the hours of use mandated by the Town of Richmond Hill and posted at the entrance of the park by vacating the area by 7pm each evening.
To all Mayor, Region and Local Councillor Candidates: Thank you for taking the time to respond to our survey. The survey results in PDF format can be found here: Candidate Dog Park Survey Results
This evening, we emailed all of the Richmond Hill Mayor, Region and Local Council incumbents and candidates the following… We will post the results once available.

It was another hot one for the clean up! A big thank you to Laurie & Daniel who dropped by to help out with the litter around the park. Fantastic job
Thanks also go to Spike’s dad who helped out with the line trimming in the park today – the help was very much appreciated!
Work on the long anticipated crosswalk across Tower Hill Road has begun. It will certainly be a relief to park users and residents to have a marked crossing to use as this road is a bit of a raceway!
The Town has been flooded with letters of support; some have been shared with the K9 Klub and some have not, but ALL are appreciated. Of course we still have a couple of months until the Parks report will be presented to Council and there is no such thing as too many letters, so keep [...]
Now more than ever we need individuals willing to help out with monitoring the status of the park for safety & maintenance along with filing brief reports as to number of users, noise levels, etc. This can be done while you are at the park with your dog and does not require a schedule. The [...]
We have received many requests for details of the petition filed to close the park.
You can read the cover letter for yourself here: Close Off Leash Park – July 11 2010 Petition Letter
Let us know what you think!
Last week the Klub had been made aware that local residents may be filing a petition to close the park. Last night’s Town Council meeting was the last before the summer break and we felt it was important to update council on the park successes so the Klub co-chair, David Walker, presented a 5 minute [...]
We had a lot of people drop by our booth at the events we attended over the last month; it was wonderful to meet so many people from the community! Many filled out a ballot for our free raffle which was drawn at the end of the day July 1.
AND THE WINNERS ARE:
[...]
We have another new addition to the park; a new tree in the small dog area!
Special thanks to Ramsey’s dad for transplanting a beautiful but unwanted tree from his clients property to its new home in our park. Hopefully the tree will quickly adapt to its new surroundings and provide some much needed shade for many [...]
While some of the Klub was manning the booth at the Oak Ridges Fair (thank you volunteers!), there were some guys at the park taking care of the installation of our long awaited bulletin board. They braved the threat of thunderstorms, heat, curious dogs and apparently underground boulders to do so, but it was worth [...]
So Heritage Festival was a very wet day – a big thank you to the volunteers that braved the (at times) torrential rain to help out at our booth!
Hopefully the weather will be much better for the Oak Ridges Fair this weekend! This fair is jam packed with events all weekend – [...]
After taking part in the Pitch In week in April, the Klub thought the park could certainly benefit from a monthly clean up and declared the last Sunday of every month to be Clean Sweep day. Our intentions were that garbage on the path leading up to the park and the immediate surrounding area be picked up, [...]
The Richmond Hill K9 Klub is pleased to announce that our friends at the Canadian Tire Store located at Tower Hill Rd. & Yonge Street, have provided us with the bulk of the funding required to build and erect the new park bulletin board.
We anticipate delivery and installation before the end of June. It [...]

Just a reminder that Pitch-In Week 2010 is April 19 – 25 and the Klub will be doing our part on Sunday, April 25th RAIN or SHINE (keep your fingers crossed for shine!). Our fantastic park volunteers do a stellar job of keeping the park itself litter free but the area surrounding the park is [...]

Thank you to all who attended last night’s meeting – it was wonderful to see so many familiar faces from the park and to learn names other than “Fido’s Mom / Dad” !
